European Research Funding

Most European Union research grant funding is delivered through seven-year research and innovation work programmes. The current funding programme is Horizon 2020, which runs to 31 December 2020. The next funding programme is Horizon Europe (1/1/21 – 31/12/28).

There are two types of funding opportunities: bottom-up fellowship-style grants, and calls for pan-European collaborative project responses to challenges set by the European Commission in specific focus areas. In addition there is funding for very specific types of activity - such as Innovative Training Networks and COST and one-off prize competitions. The framework programme also part-finances self-governing funding organisations such as the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, and the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership.

Information about Horizon 2020 (including focus areas and context), and preliminary information about what might be expected in Horizon Europe is on the European Commission’s webpages.

Other European Commission bodies provide grant funding for specialist activities some of which may be relevant to researchers.
